Lecture on Well Engineering

Guest Lecture by MR. PARTHA NAG

Under the ambit of SPE ISM Dhanbad Students Chapter, a guest lecture was organized in the lecture hall Pet 1 of ISM on August 3, 2011. Mr. Partha Nag, a distinguished alumnus of 1995 petroleum engineering batch who is currently working as a Well Engineer at SHELL in Brunei Darussalam was the speaker for the event. The topic for lecture was WELL ENGINEERING which included some of the pioneering wells drilled by Shell.

The event started with Dr. A.K.Pathak, Head of Department of Petroleum Engineering giving an introductory speech on drilling engineering and highlighting the illustrious academic career of Mr. Partha Nag. The other faculty members of petroleum engineering department present at the occasion were Professor Ajay Mandal, the faculty sponsor of the chapter; Dr Chandan Gudiya, assistant professor; and Dr T K Naiya, assistant professor. The programme kicked off with the speaker sharing some of his nostalgic memories of college life that re-instilled his agile sportive emotions.

The lecture mainly focused on latest trends in the Oil Industry and the unique Snake Wells drilled by SHELL that he was a part of. He also emphasized on the use of Geo-Pilot Rotary Steerable System which is quickly becoming a favorite tool for directional drilling among the modern Well Engineers. He engrossed the audience completely when he introduced some unconventional wells like Hook Wells, and Snake Wells as well. The presentation was very interactive and stimulated students to ask numerous questions while the lecture went on. In the closing minutes he also emphasized on the lethal phenomenon of underground blowout and introduced the concept of friction factor to optimize the drilling expenditure.

The event witnessed great participation from the second year students of Petroleum Engineering as the lecture was on a topic which they were currently reading in the curriculum. A large number of students of third as well as final year were also present at the venue.

The end of the event saw a concluding speech from Dr. Ajay Mandal, Faculty Sponsor, SPE ISM Student Chapter describing the work done by Mr. Partha Nag as outstanding in his domain and thanked him for taking time out of his schedule and addressing the students. A memento of appreciation was then presented to our speaker by the head of department and the event was concluded by Mr Ujjwal Nand, the anchor, amidst a loud round of applause from the audience.
